Backing track music

May 12, 2010

I wanted to include this backing track as I really felt as though it would emphasise the feeling of isolation that Sandra felt, I felt as though it would also help to portray Raymond’s helplessness in trying to prove to his wife that he meant no harm.

Radio drama- representation of main character

April 22, 2010

Sandra is represented as both the main character and narrator; she explains the dramatic situation through soliloquies and gives indications towards the other characters by allowing various types of action to take place. The opening is heard through her TV and she expresses her thoughts to the audience through two monologues. The story is seen through her eyes, it is all told through her own interpretation. As she is used for narration it avoids the disadvantage of an impersonal and unidentified voice.

Sandra is represented as your everyday housewife, loving, caring and also emotional however she still portrays a woman with power. Her scenes with her children further express this. She is represented as your conventional wife and mother.

She is presented in a likeable way through her sensitive voice but potent words; she is a likeable character which is essential as due to the fact that she is the narrator she needs to be tolerable.

Her relationship with her husband is portrayed as honest, to further express Sandra as a character.

Script Analysis

March 26, 2010

From my first draft I realised that the opening to the drama expressed the likely nature of the action and indicated the setting but it did not clearly express the character. In my next draft I ensured that the character in which the story was based on would be introduced in the opening dialogue.

I believed that the simple sound of the camera clicking at the press conference would express and give the listener more of an idea of where the particular scene is being shot

In my final draft before recording I decided to add music to help create a thoughtful atmosphere, I would use the same ‘soundtrack’ at various points in the drama either to summarise the mood of what happened or to signal a change of mood in what is about to happen. I would also like it to play in the background during certain pieces of dialogue to emphasise events taking place so it would be played at a lower volume.

Throughout the drama a variety of sounds would be used to hold the audiences attention; both background and atmospheric sounds, as I went through my numerous sounds, I built up the various sounds effects in each scene to create a unique aural landscape and also to add to the realism in each scene.

Dialogue and narration is key to a radio drama as this is where the use of words come into place; this is the reason for the soliloquies as this reveals the characters thoughts, these are confidential comments characters make that only the audience can hear. These soliloquies are performed by Sandra who also acts as the narrator she explains the dramatic situation and gives indications of the characters; she allows action to take over from monologues to arguments. As a character is used for narration it avoids the disadvantage of an impersonal and unidentified voice.
